Like most psychedelic hallucinogens, mescaline is not physically addictive; however, it can cause tolerance meaning higher doses are need to achieve the same hallucinogenic effect. Mescaline-containing cacti can induce severe vomiting and nausea, which is an important part to traditional Native-American or Shaman ceremonies and is considered a cleansing ritual and a spiritual aid. “Trips”, the intense psychedelic experience for the user, may be pleasurable and enlightening or anxiety-producing and unpleasant (known as a “bad trip”). There is no way to know how a user’s mescaline experience may ultimately play out.

How is mescaline used or abused?

People have used hallucinogens for hundreds of year, mostly for religious rituals or ceremonies. From the earliest recorded time, peyote has been used by natives in northern Mexico and the southwestern United States, where it grows, as a part of traditional religious rites. It has an effect that is similar to LSD or psilocybin (magic mushrooms) and other hallucinogenic drugs. Mescaline was made a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substance Act (CSA) in 1970, making it an illegal substance with no medical benefits.

Types of Mesclun

Spiritual respect for peyote and the hard-fought legal right to use it are not the only reasons why the Native American community is pushing back on drug reform advocates. Peyote is very slow-growing and only thrives in a small territory of southern Texas and northern Mexico. Over-harvesting peyote is a real threat to the extinction of the plant. It may take 10 or more years for a single peyote cactus to transition from a seedling to the first stage of flowering. Tracing back its history19, mescaline has been used as a religious sacrament for at least one hundred years in the USA. The religious use of peyote was formed by the Native American Church in the late nineteenth century in Oklahoma, USA.

How to take mescaline

Peyote, in its natural form, contains dozens of different types of phenylethylamine alkaloids, some of which are pictured above. It is possible that different kinds of cacti containing various constituents could result in distinct experiences, similar to how cannabis strains produce a variety of subjective effects5. Mescaline is a naturally occurring phenylethylamine found in several cacti species that grow in regions of the United States and Mexico. Phenylethylamines are compounds that work on the sympathetic (also known as the ‘fight or flight’) nervous system.

What does mescaline feel like?

Some of the psychological effects of mescaline include internal and external hallucinations, distortion of time and space, distortion of the physical environment, euphoria, ego death, spiritual insights, tactile sensations, increased emotional sensations, and self-realization. The psychological and emotional effects of mescaline greatly vary due to many factors such as dose, set, setting, intention, and more. In medium to high doses, mescaline can initiate insightful experiences, visual alterations, and emotional sensations. Some of the positive effects of mescaline include stimulation, euphoria, spiritual insights, open and closed-eye visuals, increased positive mood, and altered perception of space and time.

Keep it in the vegetable crisper drawer and avoid excess moisture to prevent wilting. Properly stored, mesclun can retain freshness for about 5 to 7 days, ensuring its texture and flavor are maintained. You might be surprised to find that the secret often lies in the greens. Mesclun lettuce, a delightful mix of young salad greens, adds flavor and texture to your meals. Often called “salad bowl gardening,” mesclun grows in almost any type of container that is around 18 inches long and 6 to 12 inches deep as long as it has good drainage.

Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) has been traditionally consumed by Indigenous North American tribes for at least 5,500 years. The crowns of the cacti growing above ground are called the peyote buttons, which are carefully harvested to allow the plant to continue to grow. The cactus is predominantly found in northern Mexico and southwest Texas. San Pedro (Trichocereus pachanoi), also known as Huachuma, is a mescaline-containing cacti that is often found in the Andes mountains. The plant has been consumed traditionally by Indigenous cultures, mostly in South America, where the cacti and mesculin other plants are prepared as a brew named cimora.

Culinary Uses of Mesclun Lettuce

Lettuce and other seeds in the mix are typically very small, and you don’t have to worry about being too accurate, as you’ll be harvesting the baby greens before they have a chance to crowd each other out. Careful spacing of tiny seeds also tends to shift in spring rains, so save yourself the trouble. This custom mix benefits from the spiciness of Eastern flavors and the mildness of baby greens.

If you harvested your crop a bit late, the larger, tougher leaves – particularly if your mix only contains a small percentage of butterhead, crisphead, or leaf lettuces – also lend themselves well to braising for a side dish. Begin harvesting about 30 days after germination, when the leaves are about three inches long. If you’re not sure when the temperatures will reach either extreme, you can hedge your bets by planting an end-of-season mesclun crop in a container that’s easy to protect with shade cloth or row cover, and that can come indoors where it’s cool in the event of a heat wave. All of these leafy greens have shallow roots and should not be subjected to competition for water or nutrients, if you can help it. If planted in rich potting soil, or garden soil amended with compost, you shouldn’t have to worry about supplementing with additional fertilizer later in the season.

Seasoning and Dressing

After germination thin the seedlings to a spacing of 1 inch (2.5 cm.) between each plant. Choose a sunny spot, prepare the soil with organic matter, and sow seeds directly in the ground or in containers. Each year since, I’ve planted at least a container and sometimes a whole patch of some salad mix, and my pleasure in the annual harvest has never diminished. Use the “cut and come again” method to sever the whole group about an inch from the soil line when the plants are no more than four inches tall, and you can expect a new harvest to grow in about 20 days. Pick the baby greens as often as possible once the plants reach a few inches tall.

However, you might notice aphids, slugs, and snails, as well as wildlife nibbling on the leaves. As annual vegetable plants, mesclun does not require pruning other than when harvesting. But keep in mind that like baby spinach, mesclun will shrink significantly when it’s cooked, and it’s best eaten fresh. If you start suffering from salad fatigue, you can also plunk some clean tender greens into a smoothie, or lightly steam them until they’re just wilted, and eat them atop a stew, or cooked lentils or dried beans. That way, I have a clean conscience when warm weather sets in and I must uproot and compost the plants – and then wait until early fall before I’ll have another harvest to gobble.
